Meta-Reading

I rarely read. Instead I spend a lot of time meta-reading. Listening to audio books in the car, looking up authors online, quoting books and authors in my blog and in personal conversation, and thinking about what book I’m going to set on my nightstand next.

In that vein, I’d like to point out a website that www.lifehacker.org mentioned recently:

The What Should I Read Next? website can suggest items you might like reading based on real readers’ recommendations.
After inputting some of my favorite and most recent reads, these were the results:

The Forever War
- Joe Haldeman

Foundation and Earth
- Isaac Asimov

Earth
- David Brin

Rendevous With Rama
- Arthur C. Clarke

Time Enough for Love
- Robert A. Heinlein

A Gift from Earth
- Larry Niven

Phule’s Company
- Robert Asprin

Friday
- Robert A. Heinlein

A Canticle for Liebowitz
- Walter M. Jr. Miller

Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon
- Spider Robinson

Some well-known names in there, but I’ve not heard much about the books. This hasn’t solved my meta-reading problem, it’s just increased my list of books I think I should read sometime! Gah!

What are YOU reading now?

I am re-reading Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series. The first book is The Golden Compass which has been made into a movie that releases in early December. They are really FANTASTIC books and I am enjoying re-reading them. I’m getting so much more out of them now that I’m not racing through trying to find out what happens next!

Yea, my wife is a hyper-reader. She finished the Harry Potter books in under a day each.

The good thing is Megan prescreens a lot books I do end up reading.

    Thanks Sweetie.

God, no, can’t read more than 1 book at a time. Right now… “1812: the War that Forged a Nation” by Walter Borneman. Not nearly as good as either “John Adams” or “1776″ by David McCollough. I wandered into the History and Biography section of B&N and can’t get out!

I am loving “Visible Amazement” by Gale Zoe Garnett.
Just finished “Comeback” by Claire and Mia Fontaine.
    Compelling.
