Cell Phones, Telemarketers, and the National Do Not Call List

There is a lot of confusion about cell phone numbers, telemarketing calls and the National Do Not Call List.

I have seen the spam emails urging you to add your cell phone number to the list before some time period lapses. But my Dad sent me a link to the Snopes.com article. Short story is, it says that those emails are false. Your cell phone number is not going to be added automatically to a national cell phone number directory. And most cell phone companies have made committments to not sell customer phone numbers.

But the issue doesn’t stop there. Do you ever list your cell phone when you register or sign up for online shopping websites, bank accounts, credit cards, etc? You do? Well those companies have no scruples whatsoever about selling your contact information (including your cell phone) to telemarketing companies. And telemarketing companies will call every phone number they can get their hands on.

So, although there’s no deadline or impending onslaught upon your cell phone, there’s no real harm in adding it to the National Do Not Call List. And the best thing you can do if a telemarketer calls is to imform them in a firm tone to remove your number from their database because you are listed with the National Do Not Call List, and that if they call again, you will report their company to the FCC.

One last thought: . I just recently read about it on LifeHacker.org, and then got an invitation through a friend. (They are offering BETA accounts only by invite right now). Grand Central gives me a new phone number that, when dialed, rings any phone I add to my account. More importantly, it has a spam functionality similar to Yahoo! Mail spam filter. If I label a call as spam, that number won’t ring my phones next time, but give the dialer a Number Out Of Service message and add them to a spammer list at Grand Central. Enough people label it as spam, and that number stops ringing any Grand Central users phone.

Together we can stop telemarketing!
