Don’t buy books, rent them

Netflix not only reinvented movie rental and put a serious hurting on Blockbuster (which always tickles me), but created a new format for consuming media. Needless to say I’m a fan.

So, when I read about BookSwim I was really excited. One, because my wife and I are constantly buying and reading books and Two, we live in a small town with a pretty limited and outdated library collection. My wife especially wants to read books as soon as they come out, which libraries almost never have.

The system works like Netflix: You pay a monthly fee for a certain quantity at a time, send them back and the next item on your list mails out. They have plans from 3 books out at a time for $19.99 a month, to 11 books for $35.99. Which seems a bit expensive, till you realize that most hardback books run between $15 and $20. There are other book sites out there like BookMooch.com, Paperbackswap.com, and BookCrossing. I will have to do some comparisons to determine who has the most up-to-date collection before diving headlong.
